There’s a particular kind of stillness that settles over a house once it’s listed — a quiet waiting, a sense that every room is holding its breath. We were living inside that stillness when the first offer came in. It arrived on an ordinary day, without ceremony, but it carried the weight of possibility. For a moment, it felt like the future had stepped a little closer, and the past had grown a little larger, all at the same time.
When the call came in, and my husband told me that an offer had been made contingent on the perspective buyers selling their home, my heart leapt, and then my chest grew a little heavy. We began to prepare, buying boxes and packing supplies, making piles of things to travel with us, things to throw away, things to put in storage, and things to sell. Four buckets that summed up every belonging in the house, and it was a mountainous task.
The weeks moved on. The contingent offer had included us pulling the house from the market for eight weeks to allow the buyers time to list and sell their home. The early belongings that we didn’t need day to day and the ones that wouldn’t disrupt living too much were sorted out and put in the spare room, and life crept back toward the normal on the gauge and we began doing all the summer things with neighbors and friends as we waited.
And waited.
And then, just as quietly as it arrived, the offer fell through.
No drama. It was as simple as the clock running out of time. Two months had passed and they had barely had a showing, much less an offer. A request came in that we hold out a little longer, but we denied it and put the house back on the market.
It was one of those “Maybe this isn’t meant to be” kind of moments that once again came with a cornucopia of emotions. We were back in the same place we were before, but with the echo of what almost happened still lingering in the air.
But I also knew this was part of the process. Part of the journey. Part of the story.
But there was a moment — brief, private — where the stillness returned, heavier this time. Not with fear, but with the reminder that forward motion isn’t always linear. Sometimes the path dips before it rises again.
We went for a walk that evening. The same route, the same rhythm, the same conversations about Europe and cobblestone streets and bookstores tucked into corners. And somewhere in that walk, the disappointment softened. The dream hadn’t disappeared. It was simply waiting.
And it didn’t wait for long.

Sometimes they’re found in the places where people gather together over food that’s loud, messy, and made to be shared. In meeting with family, young and old. In gathering with friends. In putting down the phone and taking it all in.
A Break from the Expected
Canterbury is full of charming cafés and traditional pubs, both inside and outside the city walls. And casual, fast food dining from McDonalds to pizza to subs are equally plentiful throughout the city. But Saint Smokey’s is a shift in tone. The vibe is lived‑in, local, and unapologetically itself. The moment you step inside, the smell of smoked chicken wraps around you. Music hums under the chatter. It’s casual, energetic, and refreshingly unpolished.
This is where you go when you want to step out of the postcard version of Canterbury for a laid-back atmosphere that is both modern and industrial, relaxing and casual.
The Food That Makes the Story
Saint Smokey’s doesn’t do subtle. The portions are huge, the seasonings range from sweet to hot, and it’s all good.
During our visit, we enjoyed the:
- Chicken Wings — the perfect share‑plate if you’re traveling with kids or friends. Or makes a perfect meal for one.
- Chicken Wraps — my personal favorite. Flavorful chicken wrapped in a tortilla with lettuce and sauce for dipping (I chose the sweet).
- Chicken Sandwich — Chicken with lettace served on a fresh bun. My youngest didn't use her bbq sauce, but my oldest used both on your sandwich and dipped her chips (fries) in it.
What meal new restaurant experience would be complete without dessert. We had:
- Apple Crumble with ice cream - delicious but not quite as warm as we're used to.
- Kinder Brownie with Kinder Cream - Rich, thick, and to die for.
Most plates fall between £7-16, making it a solid stop for families, students, and travelers watching their budget.
How it Plays in Our Journey
Smokey’s is not a destination restaurant in the way that others might be. It generally flies neatly under the most popular tourist restaurants in the city. Being located near a WaitRose Grocery Store, it's on the busy St. George's Place Road while still feeling somewhat tucked away. But that’s what makes it a treasure. This is a restaurant that allows you to capture the moment with family, friends, or even relax in the pages of your favorite book. It's a place you can stumble into after exploring the cathedral or after wandering the narrow lanes of the city center. A place where you sit down, breathe out, and let the day settle while the smoke and spice do their work.
It’s the kind of stop that becomes part of the memory of the trip—not because it’s fancy, but because it’s real.

The theme parks take that storytelling magic and place it in a world guests can feel, touch, smell, and experience for themselves in a real, tangible way. And while every corner of Walt Disney World does this in a way few places can duplicate, it’s difficult to think of an attraction more immersive than Rise of the Resistance in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Stepping Into a Story, Not a Queue
The story begins the moment you step into the Resistance encampment carved into the forests of Batuu. The rockwork is jagged and worn, as if carved by decades of hidden activity. The hum of distant ships echoes overhead. Resistance radios crackle with coded chatter. Even the temperature seems to shift as you move deeper into the mountainside.
You’re not waiting for a ride. You’re entering a world that doesn’t let you stand outside the story for even a moment.
This is where Disney’s immersive design goes far beyond the norm. Batuu itself is a fully realized environment, and Rise of the Resistance is its beating heart.
The Transport That Isn’t a Pre‑Show
Most attractions have pre‑shows. Disney is famous for them. But Rise of the Resistance doesn’t, not in the way you're expecting. Here in these mountains, you receive a mission briefing.
Rey and BB‑8 appear in a hidden Resistance chamber, and Rey's holographic message flickers with urgency, and you'll find yourself recruited into the Resistnace with your first urgent mission. You need to carry intel that will stop the First Order.
When the metal doors to this secretive base slide open, and you step outside into the Batuu mountains where a transport shuttle awaits. Lt. Bek sits at the controls, ready to fly you to a rendezvous point to deliver critical message. The shuttle doors close, the engines rumble, and you lift off into the sky.
Until the First Order intercepts the transmission.
The shuttle shakes violently. Blaster fire streaks overhead. The Resistance and the First Order clash in a battle you witness through the windows on both sides.
Bek warns you of the danger, and then — in one of the most shocking transitions in theme park history — the doors open to reveal something you absolutely weren’t expecting.

There are theme park moments that stay with you forever, and the hangar reveal is one of them.
The scale is overwhelming. Rows of stormtroopers stand at attention, their heads turning as they track the prisoners. Sleek black TIE fighters line the walls. The cold, sterile precision of First Order architecture surrounds you, stretching upward into a cavernous space that feels impossibly large.
It’s theatrical. It’s cinematic. It’s completely disorienting in the best possible way.
Adult or child, the experience isn't one you simply see. It's one you full feel—the awe, the tension, the sense that something enormous is happening around you.
This is the moment where Rise of the Resistance stops being a ride and becomes a place.
Cast Members Who Become Characters
One of the most brilliant immersive elements is the cast. They don’t “play along”. They become their roles.
First Order officers are curt, intimidating, and humorless. They bark orders, glare at you, and make it abundantly clear that you are not welcome here. The trademark Disney friendliness? You won’t find it. They do not break character — not even for a second.
Be prepared to be warned not to laugh or smile. This is an interrogation. You are a prisoner of the First Order.
The Resistance fighters, on the other hand, radiate urgency. Their movements are quick, their voices hushed, their tone serious. They’re not guiding you through a ride, they’re rescuing you.
This human layer is what makes the experience breathe. It’s what makes the story feel alive. And it's brilliant.
The Escape: A Ride That’s Really a Finale
The trackless ride system is thrilling, but the thrills are never the point. Every drop, every turn, every blaster bolt is part of the narrative. You’re not on a ride vehicle, you’re escaping.
You race past stormtroopers. You dodge towering AT‑AT fire. You weave through First Order corridors. Kylo Ren confronts you, his light saber cutting through ceilings and his use of the Force pulling you closer. The urgency of a Resistance rescue surrounds you.
It’s adventure, yes. But it’s adventure that is fully and completely immersive.
Every detail keeps you locked in the story. Even the time of day is accounted for — if you enter during daylight, the final scene reflects daylight. If you enter at night, the finale matches the night sky. The story respects the world outside, keeping you grounded in the reality Batuu has created.

There was a stretch of weeks after the house went up for sale when everything felt suspended. The initial traffic through the house was scarce, almost nonexistent, and we weren’t really sure if that meant we shouldn’t be selling at all or if it just was what it was—a housing marketing slowing down at a time when sellers were no longer on top. For the most part, nothing changed. While I had gone through some closets and began an initial purge of things we wouldn’t be keeping, that was all I had done. No boxes lined the walls, our routine remained intact, and time marched on.
By now, it was summer. June in Indiana can be unpredictable, cooler, warm, hot, it’s hard to predict. But one thing that my girls and I did regardless was to take our Pomsky on a walk. During the evenings, mostly, when the air would settle and the late summer evenings would cast shades of pink and purple across the Indiana sky. These strolls were more than my teenagers trudging after me while we gave the dog exercise; it was their time to chat about whatever was on their mind. In a natural way, those walks became the perfect time for imagining something new.
Those walks quickly morphed into the place and time when dreams and plans for Europe first took shape.
It started simply, with the girls asking what it might look like to live somewhere across the ocean. What the streets would feel like. Whether the houses would look different. If the bookstores would smell the same. They asked about trains and castles and Christmas markets, about accents and foods, about the kinds of adventures we might find if we were brave enough to go. Would it feel different to live somewhere outside of the States? Would it be scary? What would it be like to see chateaus and the Eiffel Tower and Stonehenge?
Some answers we had—the internet is sometimes a beautiful thing—but many we didn’t. Not real ones. But we had possibilities. And sometimes possibilities are enough to start building a future.
We talked about the places we’d want to see first. The filming locations they’d recognize from their favorite shows. The bookish corners I’d want to explore. The small towns that felt like they belonged in a story. We imagined walking through cobblestone streets with no rush, no hurry, enjoying the feeling and adventure of being somewhere new and letting it unfold around us.
Those conversations didn’t feel like planning just yet. It was more daydreaming, a feeling that possibilities I never dared to believe could happen were on their way. Those walks to the park, sitting on the swings with dog beside us, our feet dangling and familiar cars passing by, in their own quiet way, became the foundation of everything that came next.
Looking back, I think that’s when the idea of Europe morphed from being a distant thought and something I had been watching on YouTube to becoming more real. It stopped being, "Oh, we’ll travel there and then come back to everything we know" to something we could picture being a future. Something we could move toward.
The combination of a growing business entity, my dreams, and their curiosity became the fuel that gave me the courage to move forward into a journey that was-and continues to be-sometimes full of color and sometimes very gray and foggy.
We didn’t know when the house would sell. We didn’t know how the next steps would unfold. But on those walks, the future stopped being a question and started becoming a direction.
And that was enough.
There’s a moment, right as you step beneath the rusted beams and moss‑covered walkways of Pandora, when you realize Disney didn’t build a movie set here. It’s more than that. Better than that.
Because Pandora is not a simple retelling of Avatar, or even a glimpse into how they created the story. The Vally of Mo’ara invites all those who are friendly to the Na’vi to explore and experience what comes after the events of the first movie.
Set several decades after the events of the first movie (which took place in the year 2154), this is the land prior to the events of Avatar: The Way of Water (2169). It’s a land that survived colonization, reclaimed itself, and now opens its arms only to those who come with humility and in peace. The Na’vi oversee our ventures, welcoming but strictly enforcing rules on how the valley is treated.
The Slow Shift Into Another World

The Scars That Tell the Truth
The Valley of Mo’ara is a gorgeous, almost wild space. But in it remains the damage and scars left behind after the humans left Pandora. Rust. Broken metal. Walkways swallowed by vines. Concrete overtaken by moss. All these remnants are what was left behind by the RDA mining operation and the ensuing war against the Na’vi. These ruins serve as reminders to when the greed and disregard for a culture nearly destroyed a peaceful people and the creatures that lived among them. And slowly, artifacts are being reclaimed by the waterfalls, foliage, and peace that has returned to the valley.
A Valley Reborn
Then the world opens.
The floating mountains rise above you like ancient guardians. Waterfalls cut through the cliffs, misting the air. The forest hums with a quiet confidence, like a place that knows it has survived something immense.
This is the Valley of Mo’ara, sacred ground to the Na’vi.
The war is over. The RDA is gone. The land has healed. And now, for the first time, humans are allowed to return, but not as conquerors. This time, they come as students.
ACE: The New Human Story
Every sign you pass belongs to ACE — Alpha Centauri Expeditions, a peaceful eco‑tourism group dedicated to studying and protecting Pandora. They’re the opposite of the RDA in every way.
Their mission is simple:
- learn
- preserve
- respect
- never exploit
You’re not a tourist here. You’re a guest.
And Pandora only allows guests who understand the responsibility of being present.
Eating in Pandora: Light, Fresh, and Surprisingly Good
Pandora has one of the most unique quick‑service dining options in Walt Disney World that can only be challenged by Star Wars’ Batuu in Disney Studios, and it fits the land’s atmosphere perfectly.
Satu’li Canteen
This is the heart of Pandora’s food scene — bright, fresh, customizable bowls that feel like they belong in a land built around nature and culture.
The former RDA mess hall has been transformed into a culinary exploration of the Na’vi culture, and the results are both unique and delicious while making dining a seamless part of the land’s narrative.
What works especially well in summer:
- Build‑your‑own bowls with rice, noodles, or hearty greens
- Grilled chicken and beef combos that feel satisfying but not heavy
- The cheeseburger pods — a cult favorite, especially for kids
- Blueberry cream cheese mousse — cold, light, and perfect in the heat
It’s one of the few quick‑service spots where you can eat something flavorful without feeling weighed down in the Florida sun.

Climb the mountain and walk among the foliage and waterfalls to step into a Na’vi cave carved by time and touched by ritual. The walls glow with bioluminescent markings — handprints, swirling patterns, ancient symbols that feel less like decoration and more like memory. The air is cool, still, almost reverent. This is a place where generations of Na’vi have prepared for the Iknimaya rite, the ceremony where a rider bonds with a banshee.
The cave narrows, then opens into a section of the cave where bioluminescent plants creep over rusted walls. Metal walkways lead upward to an RDA lab where ACE scientists work inside the skeleton of what the RDA left behind. Here, screens flicker and tanks pulse with soft blue light. The lab feels like a bridge between worlds as human science tries to understand the valley instead of dominating it.
As you enter the first chamber, you’re told you’ll be linked to an avatar—a Na’vi body grown for the sole purpose of connection to experience the Iknimaya rite as the Na’vi do while retrieving knowledge about the keystone species.
Once the lab doors open, you step into the linking chamber.
You sit down, not in a vehicle, but in a living interface — a bridge between your world and theirs.
The link engages.
A rush of light as you feel a breath that isn’t yours.
And suddenly you’re on the back of your banshee on a cliffside in the Valley of Mo’ara, inside your avatar body. The world stretches out in impossible scale — floating mountains suspended in mist, waterfalls cascading into glowing pools, the forest alive with movement and color.
The banshee dives, and the world drops away. Wind tears past your face. The valley opens beneath you in a rush of color and light.
You skim the ocean’s surface, spray catching the sunlight in shimmering arcs. You weave between floating mountains that hum with ancient energy. You dive into caverns lit by glowing spores. You rise into open sky where the horizon curves like a living canvas.
And then, gently, the flight slows.
The banshee lands on a cliffside overlooking an ocean teeming with life beneath an orange-pink sunset.
You return to yourself slowly, like waking from a dream that wasn’t a dream at all. The chamber fades back into view, but something in you is still soaring, still breathing with the rhythm of wings.
Flight of Passage isn’t a simple thrill ride. It takes you into Pandora and you walk away yearning for more.
The Spiritual Heart of Pandora — Na’vi River Journey
If Flight of Passage is the physical rite, Na’vi River Journey is the spiritual one, a quiet ceremony that reveals what the Valley of Mo’ara is actually protecting.
The creatures you pass—turtlebirds stepping delicately along branches, viperwolves weaving through the underbrush, woodsprites drifting like weightless seeds—move with purpose. They’re part of the rhythm of this place, woven into the ecosystem in an ancient way.
As the river bends, the forest thickens. The canopy closes overhead, and the bioluminescence deepens into richer blues and purples. Here, the environment stops being just scenery becomes more of a presence that watches and protects the creatures it has sworn to protect. The sounds change too. The distant calls of unseen creatures echo through the trees. The hum of the plants rises and falls like a chant. The river carries you forward, deeper into the heart of the valley, where the energy gathers.
And then the music begins.
Soft at first — a single thread of melody woven into the ambient sounds of the forest. It grows as you move, layered with harmonies that feel older than the valley itself. The light responds, blooming brighter with each measure, guiding you toward the source.
The forest opens, and the Shaman of Songs appears.
She stands in a clearing of light, surrounded by plants that pulse in time with her voice. Her song breathes the connection to the valley. The ritual that binds the creatures, the plants, the river, the valley, Eywa, and you into one moment of shared energy. Her movements are fluid, deliberate, almost tidal. Every gesture sends a ripple through the forest. When she appears — towering, luminous, alive with energy — the entire forest responds. Plants brighten. Woodsprites swirl. The river glows beneath you. It feels like witnessing a sunrise inside the soul of Pandora.
This is the center of Pandora’s spirit — the place where the land’s healing is maintained, where harmony is tended like a living flame.
Na’vi River Journey isn’t the rush that is Flight of Passage. Instead, it’s about the presence and the quiet harmony of being a part of nature.
The Forest That Remembers
At night, Pandora becomes something else entirely.
The bioluminescent pathways pulse under your feet. The plants glow with Eywa’s energy. The air feels alive, like the world is whispering its history. And it invites you to walk gently through its light.

The afternoon we listed the house, the air felt heavier. The home we had built, the land we watched go from being field to holding the place where my kids would grow up, was now up for sale. I remember a tightness filling my chest as I stood in the living room, the late afternoon light spilling across the floor, trying to imagine strangers walking through the space that had held our entire lives. It didn’t feel real yet. Instead, it was a bit like a dream. Or a play. Pretend.
It’s true that we had talked about moving for months, almost a whole year, if I was to be honest. But talking was just that, talking, and nothing was a commitment. Not until that moment that the realtor walked out the front door, guaranteeing us the house was listed at a good price and he felt assured it would move fast.
Until that moment he walked out the door, I had watched him make notes on the house, talk about the HOA rates, the new wash machine and even newer hot water heater—both of which would go with the house—and it had felt like a dream, robotic and distant.
Reality had seeped in.
My gut told me it was the right move to make. The necessary step. It was the moment the ball began to roll toward a different life that held more promise than the one we had, or at least a different kind of promise. But there’s a strange ache that comes with preparing your home—the one you once knew was a forever home—for strangers. Even when you believe it’s the right move to make.
Because right doesn’t always mean easy or painless.
So when the realtor asked my husband if we were ready to go live and watched with trepidation and excitement and fear as he said yes.
Not long afterwards, our home—the one where we potty trained our youngest, both rode their bikes down the street with their friends, the one where we celebrated birthdays and Christmases, cried, laughed, and lived—was now on the market with photos where other people could scroll through pictures and decide whether or not our home fit into their lives.
Tears didn’t come that afternoon. In fact, nothing else changed, not right away. I made dinner, went for a walk with the dog and my oldest, took in the familiarity of a neighborhood. It was all routine in the hours and even in the immediate days that followed. We lived our life in the community that had been a dream come true for ten years and wondered.
Would the house sell?
What would it look like on the other side of this journey we had just begun?
If it sold, would we regret it?
If it didn’t, would we be disappointed?
This journey has been a lot of things—good and bad because every journey is exactly that—but listing the house wasn’t the beginning of the move.
It was the beginning of letting go.
